The Story Behind Angel Gel™

The Story Behind Angel Gel™

How one man's courage inspired a little pot of hope

"Sometimes the smallest acts of love become the greatest legacies."

There are moments in life that quietly change everything.

For me, one of those moments wasn't in a laboratory or a business meeting. It wasn't the day Angel Gel™ was launched, or even the day I mixed the very first batch.

It began years earlier, watching the man I loved endure cancer treatment with a courage that still humbles me today.

As I watched my husband Gavin fight Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, I realised there was one battle I could fight for him.

I couldn't sit through chemotherapy in his place.

I couldn't endure radiotherapy for him.

I couldn't take away the uncertainty, the fear or the exhaustion that cancer brought into our lives.

But perhaps, with everything I had learned throughout my career in beauty therapy, aromatherapy and holistic health, I could create something that would bring him comfort when he needed it most.

I had absolutely no idea that one decision would change the course of my own life forever.

Nor did I realise that, more than twenty years later, I would still be hand-making every single jar of Angel Gel™ with exactly the same love, care and purpose that inspired the very first batch.

This is our story.

Before Cancer

If you had met Gavin before cancer entered our lives, you would probably have noticed his smile first.

He had the kind of personality that made people feel comfortable. He loved a laugh, loved an adventure and rarely sat still for very long.

If there was a mountain to cycle, Gavin wanted to climb it.

If there was a country to explore, he wanted to experience it.

One of his favourite places to ride was across the beautiful Pentland Hills near Edinburgh, where he could disappear for hours with nothing but his bike, fresh air and endless Scottish skies stretching ahead of him.

He was also incredibly conscientious in his work as a telecommunications engineer.

His career took him all over the United Kingdom and overseas, including France and Hong Kong, where he worked on preparing the new Chek Lap Kok International Airport before its historic handover to China in 1997. He was even there to witness dignitaries arriving for that remarkable moment in history.

He embraced life wholeheartedly.

Cancer simply wasn't something that belonged in our story.

The Lump That Changed Everything

In October 2001, everything changed.

A lump appeared beneath Gavin's right arm.

Not gradually.

Not over weeks.

Within an hour, it had grown to the size of a mini football.

Naturally, we went straight to hospital.

The reassurance we received was immediate.

"The one thing it definitely isn't is cancer."

We clung to those words.

For months, we believed them.

But deep down something never felt right.

After further investigations and months of uncertainty, our world finally shifted in March 2002.

At just thirty-five years old, Gavin was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Doctors explained that it wasn't confined to one place. It was also present in his liver, spleen and stomach and had probably been there silently for several years before we ever discovered that first lump.

Hearing those words is impossible to describe.

Everything suddenly divides into two lives.

Life before cancer.

Life after cancer.

Finding Strength We Never Knew We Had

People often ask what those early days were like.

The truth is that, at first, we were simply devastated.

There was shock.

Fear.

Sadness.

The future we had imagined suddenly felt uncertain.

But something remarkable happened.

The sadness slowly transformed into determination.

Neither of us was prepared to surrender hope.

We approached the diagnosis differently, but we shared exactly the same goal.

We were going to fight.

Gavin threw himself into every treatment with incredible courage.

Over the months that followed he endured intensive chemotherapy, followed by a stem cell transplant, then radiotherapy.

He rarely complained.

In fact, the only time I truly saw him falter was when chemotherapy caused his beautiful long curly hair to begin falling out.

I can still remember gently tying it back one evening because we both knew that if I brushed it, it would simply come away in my hand.

He wanted to go to work one last time with his hair.

The following day, I shaved it.

He would lose his hair three separate times during treatment.

Yet through it all, he remained astonishingly brave.

Looking back now, I think cancer revealed strengths in both of us that neither of us realised we possessed.

When Survival Isn't the Only Battle

One thing I've learned is that cancer doesn't only attack the body.

It attacks normality.

It steals routines.

Sleep becomes precious.

Comfort becomes a luxury.

Even simple everyday movements suddenly require thought.

By the time Gavin reached radiotherapy, we honestly believed we had already faced the hardest part.

We couldn't have been more wrong.

The treatment itself was successful in targeting the cancer, but it came with side effects that were incredibly difficult to witness.

The skin beneath his right arm became severely affected.

It was darkened.

Tender.

Red.

Bruised.

Every movement hurt.

Imagine trying to lift your arm.

Put on a jumper.

Roll over in bed.

Reach for a cupboard.

Now imagine every one of those movements feeling as though someone had held a blowtorch against your skin.

That was Gavin's reality.

And perhaps the hardest part for me wasn't that I couldn't fix it.

It was watching someone who had already endured so much face yet another obstacle.

Cancer had already asked enough of him.

The Moment I Decided I Had To Try

At that time I was working within the beauty and holistic therapy industry.

Over the years I had trained extensively with respected professional skincare brands including Decleor, Clarins, ESPA, Dermalogica and Collins, alongside completing my HND in Beauty Therapy.

My studies had even included formulating skincare from scratch, so I knew creating a product wasn't impossible—it simply required knowledge, care and patience.

Alongside my beauty training, aromatherapy had become a real passion.

I had spent years studying plants, essential oils and the remarkable properties of botanical ingredients.

Nature fascinated me.

Not because I believed it could perform miracles, but because I had seen how thoughtfully chosen ingredients could help care for the skin.

At the same time, I found myself looking through the growing collection of creams, ointments and medications that had accumulated during Gavin's treatment.

The medicine box seemed to grow larger every week.

Some products helped.

Some didn't.

What shocked me most was reading the long lists of possible side effects that accompanied many of them. One leaflet even warned of severe complications affecting the liver. Seeing that, after everything Gavin's body had already endured, made me pause.

I remember thinking...

There has to be another way to support his skin.

Not to replace his medical treatment.

Never that.

But to offer comfort.

To soothe.

To cool.

To care.

Sometimes love doesn't arrive with dramatic gestures.

Sometimes love simply asks...

"What can I do to make today a little easier?"

And without realising it...

That single question was about to become Angel Gel™

Where Hope Took Shape

The Sand Dunes of Findhorn

Long before Angel Gel™ ever existed in a bottle, it existed as an idea.

Ideas are funny things. Sometimes they arrive quietly when your mind finally slows down enough to listen.

Mine came on a beautiful stretch of sand at Findhorn, on Scotland's Moray coast.

Many people know Findhorn for its beautiful beaches, but for me it has always been much more than that. It is a place of reflection, learning and connection with nature.

I had travelled there to learn how natural skincare could be created using carefully selected botanical ingredients, but I came away with far more than recipes and techniques.

One afternoon, I sat alone on the sand dunes, watching the sea and allowing everything that had happened over the previous months to settle.

Gavin's diagnosis.

The chemotherapy.

The stem cell transplant.

The uncertainty.

The fear.

The endless appointments.

I wasn't trying to invent a product.

I was simply asking myself one question.

"If I could create one thing to make his days just a little easier, what would it contain?"

As the sea rolled in and out, I began mentally piecing together ingredients that I had trusted throughout my career.

Not because they sounded fashionable.

Not because they were expensive.

But because each one had earned its place.

By the time I left Findhorn, the recipe already existed in my notebook.

When I returned home, my kitchen became my workshop.

Findhorn, Morayshire, Scotland

Choosing Every Ingredient With Purpose

Creating Angel Gel wasn't a matter of throwing together a handful of natural ingredients and hoping for the best.

Every decision mattered.

Every ingredient had to justify why it belonged there.

Drawing on my background in beauty therapy, aromatherapy and professional skincare, I carefully balanced what I already knew with everything I had learned at Findhorn. It took years of experience and many hours of thought before I finally settled on one formulation—and remarkably, it was the only recipe I ever needed.

Aloe vera formed the foundation because of its wonderfully cooling feel and its reputation as a skin-conditioning botanical. It also naturally contains a rich combination of vitamins, minerals and amino acids that have made it a favourite in skincare for generations.

Lavender was never in doubt.

As an aromatherapist, I often smile and say that lavender is the beginning, the middle and the end of aromatherapy. It has been treasured for centuries, and through my own studies—particularly reading the work of the French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé—I became fascinated by its long history in caring for the skin.

Witch hazel reminded me of my childhood, when it seemed to appear for every bump, bite and bruise. I valued its traditional use in skincare and the way it leaves the skin feeling toned and refreshed.

Tea tree was an easy decision because it has long been appreciated in skincare for helping keep skin feeling clean and fresh.

And then there was arnica.

Bruising had become an unfortunate part of Gavin's journey, not only because of treatment but because he'd lost so much weight that even the smallest knock left a mark. I felt arnica complemented the other botanicals beautifully, particularly alongside lavender, creating the balanced formula I had been searching for.

When I finally mixed that first batch in my kitchen, I wasn't thinking about businesses, branding or selling products.

I was thinking about my husband

choosing every ingredient with purpose

The First Application

I handed Gavin the small pot and explained what I'd made.

He didn't hesitate.

After months of creams, lotions and ointments, he was more than willing to try something different.

The first thing he noticed wasn't how it looked.

It was how it felt.

"It isn't greasy," he said with a smile.

It absorbed quickly into his skin without leaving the greasy residue of many creams and ointments. More importantly, it felt cooling and soothing almost immediately, giving his sore, irritated skin some much-needed relief.

Neither of us expected what happened next.

Not because we doubted the ingredients.

But because we'd both become used to progress being painfully slow.

The Walk I'll Never Forget

The following morning, Gavin was still resting in bed when I decided to take the dog for a walk.

I quietly left the house, hoping he might finally get some uninterrupted sleep.

As I walked, I found myself wondering whether the gel had brought him any comfort at all.

Had it helped?

Had I simply wanted it to help so badly that I'd convinced myself it might?

When I returned home and opened the front door, I barely had time to put my keys down.

Suddenly, Gavin came bounding out of the bedroom.

"Come and look at this!" he said.

He was moving his arm in ways he hadn't been able to for weeks.

Naturally.

Comfortably.

Almost forgetting that only the day before, every movement had caused him pain.

I just stood there watching him.

Not because I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

But because I could.

His face had changed.

The pain that had been written across it for so long had softened.

His energy was different.

His mood was different.

Hope had quietly walked back into our home.

Within the next couple of days, I also began noticing changes in the appearance of his skin. The angry colour was beginning to settle, and, perhaps most importantly of all, he was sleeping more comfortably because he could finally move naturally in bed again.

Three days later, we looked at each other and knew this little pot was something special.

Gavin laughed and called it "magic."

Secretly...

I think part of me did too

A Promise Kept

From "Magic Gel" to Angel Gel™

Neither Gavin nor I ever imagined that little pot sitting on our kitchen worktop would become a business.

There was no business plan.

No marketing strategy.

No dreams of building a brand.

There was simply a husband who couldn't stop talking about something that had made his days a little easier.

By the fourth day after using the gel, he had become its greatest champion.

He showed everyone.

Family.

Friends.

Neighbours.

Anyone who would stand still long enough.

"Look at this," he'd say, lifting his arm with a smile that I hadn't seen for such a long time.

Then came the inevitable question.

"Can Kirstine make me some?"

Within a week, I had my very first order.

Not because I'd advertised.

Not because I'd set up a website.

But because people trust genuine stories.

Word spread from one person to another, and before long people weren't asking for "that gel Kirstine made."

They were asking for the Magic Gel.

Even today, more than two decades later, there are still customers who smile and ask,

"Have you got any more of your Magic Gel?"

I don't think that nickname will ever disappear.

And if I'm honest...

I hope it never does.

Learning That Hope Can Travel

As more people began using the gel, something unexpected happened.

They came back.

Not simply to buy another bottle.

They came back with stories.

Every story was different.

One person had discovered it while looking for something soothing for their skin.

Another kept one in the kitchen.

Someone else carried one in a handbag.

Parents wanted it close by for everyday family life.

Walkers packed it before heading into the hills.

Gardeners tucked it into their sheds.

Over the years, I listened to hundreds of these conversations.

Some surprised me.

Some made me smile.

Some genuinely left me speechless.

It reminded me of something I have always believed.

No two people are the same.

No two skins are the same.

And often, the most meaningful feedback doesn't come from a laboratory.

It comes from ordinary people sharing ordinary moments.

Those conversations have shaped Angel Gel™ just as much as I have.

Every email.

Every handwritten note.

Every returning customer.

Every recommendation made over a garden fence or a cup of tea.

Each one has become another chapter in a story that is still being written today.

The Hardest Goodbye

Life has a way of giving us extraordinary joy and unimaginable heartbreak, sometimes within the same chapter.

Only eighteen months after I created Angel Gel, I lost Gavin.

Even now, after all these years, writing those words still hurts.

There are some losses that time doesn't erase.

It simply teaches us how to carry them.

Angel Gel couldn't change what was happening inside his body.

Cancer had taken so much from us already, and despite every treatment, every ounce of courage and every hope we held onto, there came a point where love alone could no longer keep him here.

The day I lost Gavin, I didn't just lose my husband.

I lost my best friend.

My biggest supporter.

The man who believed in me long before I believed in myself.

For a while, I wondered whether I could continue making the gel at all.

Every bottle reminded me of him.

Every ingredient carried a memory.

Every label felt personal.

But then something happened.

The orders didn't stop.

People kept returning.

Not because they knew my story.

But because Angel Gel had become part of theirs.

And slowly I realised something.

Perhaps this wasn't mine to give up.

Perhaps this little bottle had grown beyond us.

The Child We Never Had

People sometimes ask me what Angel Gel means to me after all these years.

I usually smile.

Then I tell them something I don't often write down.

Angel Gel is the child Gavin and I never had.

It was born from love.

Raised through determination.

Nurtured with patience.

And continues to grow long after the two people who first dreamed it into existence could ever have imagined.

Every single bottle I make today is still handcrafted by me.

I still pour.

I still label.

I still check every batch.

Because somewhere, someone I have never met will open that bottle.

Perhaps they're having a difficult day.

Perhaps they're caring for someone they love.

Perhaps they simply need a little comfort.

I'll probably never know their story.

Just as they may never know all of mine.

But somehow our lives will briefly meet through one small bottle of Angel Gel.

And I think that's rather beautiful.

More Than a Product

When I first sat on those sand dunes at Findhorn all those years ago, I thought I was trying to solve one problem.

I never imagined I was beginning a journey that would still be unfolding more than twenty-two years later.

Angel Gel has never been about chasing trends.

It has never been about becoming the biggest.

Or the loudest.

Or the fastest-growing.

It has always been about people.

About kindness.

About taking the knowledge I gathered through years of beauty therapy, aromatherapy and holistic practice, and turning it into something made with genuine care.

Every ingredient is chosen with intention.

Every batch is made by hand.

Every order that leaves my workshop carries the same quiet hope it carried the very first time I handed a little pot to Gavin.

That hope is simple.

To bring a little comfort.

To help someone feel cared for.

To remind them that even in life's hardest moments, kindness still matters.

more than just a product

Thank You

If you've read this far, thank you.

You've shared one of the most personal chapters of my life.

Perhaps you've found this story because someone recommended Angel Gel.

Perhaps you were searching for natural skincare.

Or perhaps you simply became curious about the woman behind the little bottles.

However you arrived here, I'm truly grateful.

Because every person who chooses Angel Gel becomes part of its continuing story.

A story that began with one husband.

One wife.

One kitchen.

One notebook filled with ideas.

And one simple wish...

To make someone I loved feel just a little more comfortable.

Twenty-two years later, that wish still lives inside every jar I make.

And I hope, wherever life has brought you today, that when you hold Angel Gel in your hands, you don't just discover a skincare product.

I hope you discover the love, hope and quiet determination that inspired it.

From my heart to yours,

Kirstine Henderson
